Abstract: The governments have enacted a number of legislations to protect the interest of customers and a number of voluntary consumer organizations are also working in this direction. And business ethics or otherwise has a direct impact on the customer welfare. In this backdrop, the present is an attempt to address the issues like, who should be held responsible for customer exploitation? Whether the businessmen have moral obligation to protect the interests of consumers? In the context of rural, poor and illiterate customers with no or fewer options, what is the moral obligation of businessmen? Is there any justification for profiteering (by businessmen) by exploiting innocent and helpless customers? What about the ethical responsibility of businessmen? The proposed study intends to address all these issues to find the extent to which good ethical practices of business units protect the interest, and enhance the welfare, of consumers. newline
